Meerut is a historic place and owns a specific place in ancient history because of its revolts and bravery during British reign. The city has second largest army cantonment in India, it is the 16th largest city area wise and 14th fastest developing city and ranked 63rd for fastest urban development.

It is the only city that specializes in the production of scissors and cricket sports due to which it is sometimes also called as City of Scissors and Sports Capital of India. Besides it is also regarded as a trade centre for many agricultural products and is also known for smelting, handicrafts and milling of cotton, sugar, flour and oilseeds.

The city was the original location of one of the pillars erected by Asoka the great that was later on shifted to Delhi in the middle of 14th century by Firoz Shah Tughluq.

The city is governed by Meerut Metropolitan Region with a population of 1,420,902.

The best months to visit the city are from November to February. A special Nauchandi festival is organized in the city for 15 days just after Holi. The festival is dedicated to Hindu goddess Chandi and to celebrate the birth of Ravan’s wife Mandodri. With the passage of time the festival has linked and has also become a source of communal harmony between the Hindus and the Muslims. Official language spoken by most of them in the city is Hindi but some of them also speak Urdu.
