Maya Rashtra or the city of Maya, now called as Meerut, is situated towards the west of UP and is known to be a busy trade centre from the Vedic times. Its geographical location between Ganga and Yamuna Rivers makes it a hub of daily important human activities.
Hindu mythology states that Hastinapur, the capital of Kauravas, was situated in Meerut city. The city lies between Indraprastha (New Delhi) and Hastinapur and has various other places related to the era of Mahabharata. It is also believed that Lakshaghaha, a place built by Duryodhan to kill Pandavas, is also situated in Birnava which is a village close to the city.
People of the city are known for their bravery because they offered fierce resistance in 14th century and this is what historians like about the city. The nationalistic struggle for Independence and the first war between patriots and the British also began from the city that continued to inspire people all over India. This struggle paved the way for the organised national movement later in the 19th century.
A number of illustrious figures like Dayanand Saraswati, Colonel Olcott, Annie Besant, and Sir Syed Ahmad Khan visited the city during various reform movements. The Arya Samaj movement too gained popularity in the city.
